Why do less successful people tend to hate more successful people?

Here at ICC, we coach many of the top producing agents and teams across North America. Our clients go through this all the time. Oftentimes, real estate agents who are not so successful hate the number one real estate agent or team in the area. There is a lot of jealousy. That’s pretty normal. It’s a big topic when it comes to Realtor leadership training because it’s important to maintain a positive mindset as a leader. Don’t let the haters get you down.

Have you noticed that nobody talks about the unsuccessful real estate agents? Successful agents, teams, and brokerages take the heat. Just through success, there can be a lot of negative chatter. You must make sure that you don’t absorb that negativity — for yourself, and for those you lead. This is extremely important for your own happiness, and for the happiness of your team/brokerage members. It takes a lot of training to maintain positive leadership as a Realtor when you feel like everyone else is trying to tear you down.

Realtor Leadership Training: The crabs in a bucket analogy

Here is a good analogy. When crabs are in a bucket, they are stuck. And this is confusing, because crabs are very strong animals. They climb all over slick rocks by the ocean, and they have big claws and arms to grab hold of objects with ease. You might think that with multiple crabs in a bucket, at least a few crabs will be able to escape. This is not so, however, because whenever the group of crabs sees a crab start to escape, they pull him back down.

This is similar to what happens with humans. As a group, when we see someone being more successful than us, we tend to want to tear them down. It’s awful, but for some reason, it is human nature (and crab nature) to do so.

Surround yourself with people at your level

This is so important — maybe one of the most important tips when it comes to Realtor leadership training. You must surround yourself with other successful real estate agents. This is the best way to ensure that instead of being torn down when you seek success, you will be boosted up.

You are the aggregate of those that you spend the most time with. Let that sink in for a second. Look around you — who are your people? Are your people encouraging you? Do the people you hang out with want the best for you … truly? Choose your people wisely. It’s possible that your friends are not boosting you up. They may be just like those crabs in the bucket, wanting to tear you down if you get too close to escaping.

If you want to reach the next level, make sure that you are hanging out with people that are already at the next level. They understand where you are at. This type of friend can give you advice. They can listen to your problems because they have been there done that. This will be your best shot at getting out of your “bucket” and reaching that next level of business. When it comes to Realtor leadership training, this is something I cannot emphasize enough.
