In the world of short-form video, the first three seconds are everything. If your reel doesn’t grab attention immediately, viewers will scroll right past it.

I’m not saying you need to hire a production team or buy a DSLR camera. But if your video is dark, hard to hear, or doesn’t have captions—people are going to scroll.

Here’s what you need to focus on:

  • Lighting: Stand in front of a window or grab an affordable ring light. Natural light is your best friend.

  • Audio: Use a lav mic or talk directly into your phone in a quiet room. Bad audio kills engagement faster than anything else.

  • Captions: Add subtitles to every video. Most users watch on mute, especially on Instagram or Facebook. If they can’t understand what you’re saying, they’ll never engage.

Reels that look and sound decent are far more likely to perform well—even if the message is simple.
